General Hemorrhoid Information

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in your lower rectum and anus, similar to varicose veins. Internal hemorrhoids are inside the rectum and are often painless but may bleed. External hemorrhoids are outside the rectum and can cause pain, itching, irritation, and swelling.

Hemorrhoids can result from increased pressure in the lower rectum. Causes include straining during bowel movements, sitting for long periods on the toilet, or having chronic diarrhea or constipation.

Common symptoms include painless bleeding during bowel movements, itching or irritation, swelling around the anus, and pain or discomfort.

Prevention involves lifestyle and dietary changes. Key steps include drinking plenty of water, eating a diet rich in fiber (from whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables), exercising regularly, and avoiding straining during bowel movements.

You should seek medical attention if your symptoms are severe or persistent for more than a week. It is crucial to see a doctor if you experience rectal bleeding, as this can be a symptom of a more serious condition.

Non-medical remedies include warm baths (soaking for 15-20 minutes a few times a day), which can reduce itching and swelling. Applying a cold compress or ice pack can also numb pain and reduce swelling temporarily.

Increasing fiber and water intake helps soften stools and makes bowel movements easier, reducing strain on the hemorrhoidal veins. Regular exercise also helps prevent constipation and can increase blood flow to the anal area.

In addition to warm baths and cold packs, other effective at-home remedies may include using moist towelettes that don’t contain alcohol or perfume and over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Ointments and creams are typically used for external hemorrhoids to relieve symptoms on the skin around the anus. The key difference between an ointment and a cream is their base, with ointments being oil-based and creams being water-based.

Oil-based ointments provide sustained lubrication and a protective barrier against irritation from friction and moisture, which is crucial for soothing the inflamed tissue. Suppositories are inserted into the rectum and are best for treating internal hemorrhoids.

Yes, while hemorrhoids are generally harmless, symptoms like rectal bleeding can sometimes be a sign of more serious conditions. This is why it is important to see a doctor if you experience bleeding.

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins, while an anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anus. Both can cause pain and bleeding, so a medical diagnosis is needed to differentiate between them. Please consult with your doctor.
